In logic and philosophy, the term proposition (from the word "proposal") refers to both (a) the "content" or "meaning" of a meaningful declarative sentence or (b) the pattern of symbols, marks, or sounds that make up a meaningful declarative sentence. The meaning of a proposition includes that it has the quality or property of being either true or false, and as such propositions are called truthbearers.

The existence of propositions in the abstract sense, as well as the existence of "meanings", is disputed by some philosophers. Where the concept of a "meaning" is admitted, its nature is controversial. In earlier texts writers have not always made it sufficiently clear whether they are using the term proposition in sense of the words or the "meaning" expressed by the words. To avoid the controversies and ontological implications, the term sentence is often now used instead of proposition to refer to just those strings of symbols that are truthbearers, being either true or false under an interpretation. Strawson advocated the use of the term "statement", and this is the current usage in mathematical logic.

What do you guys think of the google proposition 8 maps?
Q. It is a google map listing the names, addresses, and amounts that people donated to proposition 8. Invasion of privacy or revenge? Yahoo won't let me post the link, but the map is definitely real, I am looking at it right now.

A. I don't care what a gay person thinks about me when it comes to laws that was established for decades. I say "keep traditional marriages" to man and woman, and not of same gender marriages. I would support a "union" for these couples and nothing else, they should be happy that we are reaching over the table half way to compromise a solution.

What is the dual of a logical proposition?
Q. I'm reading a paper on the geometric implications of analytical logic and it discusses the concept of the "dual" of a proposition. I would normally be inclined to think this means some sort of equivalent proposition (e.g., p AND (NOT q) = NOT[(NOT p) OR q], but it appears to refer to, say, p AND q versus p OR q. I'm familiar with the duality principle of projective geometry, but this appears to be very different. Can anybody illuminate this relationship for me? I'm not immediately seeing it.

A. You're right, this logical duality is different from the duality in projective geometry. But the dual of a proposition is not an equivalent proposition. As Michel N said, the dual of a proposition is obtained by interchanging AND with OR, and interchanging 0 (FALSE) with 1 (TRUE). NOT is left unchanged. (I'm not sure what Michel meant by bringing in DeMorgan's Laws, but this idea is called duality, not DeMorgan's Laws.) Thus the dual of P AND (Q or not r) is P OR (Q and not r) The idea of duality gets more complicated if you try to bring in IMPLIES, so that is usually omitted. If you regard propositions as formulas of Boolean Algebra, then some equations are valid in Boolean Algebra, and others are not. p and q = Q AND P (valid) P AND… [cont.]

Can anyone explain to a young college student what exactly the California proposition 1D is?
Q. I have to do a persuasive speech on The may, 2009 proposition 1D. I have researched and researched, and I am having trouble getting down to what it basically is... and what voting yes means and what voting no means. If anyone could help me I would VERY much appreciate it! You can let me know your opinion too!

A. To avoid additional cuts in general fund-supported state spending, Proposition 1D would authorize a fund-shift of $268 million in annual tobacco tax revenue currently earmarked for "First Five" early childhood development programs under the terms of California Proposition 10 (1998). That revenue, plus $340 million in unspent "First Five" tobacco tax money now held in a reserve fund, would instead be used to pay for other state government health and human services programs that serve children, including Medicaid, foster care, child care subsidies, preschool programs, and more. Money for these programs currently comes from the state general fund.[3] Currently, 80 percent of "First Five" money is distributed to county governments for similar… [cont.]
