A conversation is communication between multiple people. It is a social skill that is not difficult for most individuals. Conversations are the ideal form of communication in some respects, since they allow people with different views on a topic to learn from each other. A speech, on the other hand, is an oral presentation by one person directed at a group.

For a successful conversation, the partners must achieve a workable balance of contributions. A successful conversation includes mutually interesting connections between the speakers or things that the speakers know. For this to happen, those engaging in conversation must find a topic on which they both can relate to in some sense. Those engaging in conversation naturally tend to relate the other speaker's statements to themselves. They may insert aspects of their lives into their replies, to relate to the other person's opinions or points of conversation.

Conversation is indispensable for the successful accomplishment of almost all activities between people, especially the coordination of work, the formation of friendship and for learning.

Through history many people have been noted for their conversation, among them Socrates, Samuel Johnson, Marie Thérèse Rodet Geoffrin, Anne Louise Germaine de Staël and Gregory Bateson.

Conversation analysis is a branch of sociology which studies the structure and organization of human interaction, with a more specific focus on conversational interaction.

How do I begin a conversation with cute girls in the library?
Q. I am an 18 year old boy who has just started university in my hometown. I have never had a girlfriend in the past as I've been too shy with girls. Since I've started uni I have made an effort to talk to girls in my lectures and I have become friendly with them and managed to talk to them without feeling nervous. However, even though these girls are friends they aren't really my type as I'm attracted to more reserved, cute girls. I see loads of pretty girls in the library who I'd like to talk to. I can talk because there is a big room for group study. I think I can talk to them fine but I just don't know how to start a conversation with them. In my lectures its easy to introduce yourself but its more awkward in the library. So, how do I… [cont.]

A. I can think of only one way to start a conversation in a library: Comment on what they're reading. There really isn't much else to start with. Ask the girl out? I'd say no. Just ask her to go for a drink? That would probably be the best idea, that way, if it is a more reserved type, she won't feel like she is being rushed into anything too serious.

How do I start a conversation with a random girl?
Q. I recently broke up with my long-term girlfriend and my game is rusty. What do you suggest for sparking a conversation? I just need an ice breaker. I don't want any dumb pick up lines, just something small that I can start a conversation with. I'm going to the bar tomorrow and I'd like to meet a few girls and have a couple conversations, maybe get a couple numbers who knows! Thanks everyone.

How do start a conversation with a girl?
Q. What kind of things would i talk to a girl about? how do i start a conversation with them?

A. First thing you need to do is to not be nervous. Confidence is everything when it comes to breaking the ice with a female. If you walk up to a female and you are looking at the ground or fumbling around with your words, her and her freinds will eat you alive. Be confident but not arrogant... a female will hate you if you are cocky or too arrogant. As far as breaking the ice, you can say just about anything to break the ice. If it is a group of girls, to me the easiest thing to do is to introduce yourself to all of them compliment them all and then say something to the one that you are interested in that really gets her attention. And something that doesnt make the other girls think you are loser. Females influence each other so much… [cont.]
